This “Poor Man’s Steak” recipe came to me from an Amish acquaintance. That’s very fantastic. Why do I not feel deprived eating it?

Amish cuisine is the source of the simple and time-honoured Amish Poor Man’s Steak. A terrific replacement for expensive steak cuts, this dish makes a delicious and full supper with ground beef and basic kitchen products. From one generation to the next, the recipe has been passed down and reflects the creativity and simplicity of Amish cooking.

Because Amish Poor Man’s Steak is so flexible, you might present it in many ways. Common side dishes, however, include creamy mashed potatoes and buttery corn. The silky mashed potatoes and the strong beef patties have rather different textures, which are truly mouth-watering. Try serving the meal roasted vegetables, green beans, or a crisp green salad to balance out the dish and provide some harmony and brightness.

The recipe asks for two pounds of ground beef.

One half onion, chopped

One cup of saltine crumbs
